Between the mainstream and a gap in the market
No chlorine is used to clean an eco swimming pool. Instead, special plants are responsible for cleaning the water. One disadvantage of this method is that algae also thrive in natural pools. To address this issue, Torsten Reuß from Dettingen unter Teck developed the world’s first cleaning device for swimming pools. He was awarded the 2015 Start-up Prize for Baden-Württemberg in recognition of his achievement.
When Reuß built a natural pool a few years ago, he never guessed that it would motivate him to set up his own business: “After a few years, algae started to build up in the swimming area. I couldn’t find any suitable treatment, and all of the swimming pool owners I asked confirmed that they had the same problem.” Because there was no cleaning device on the market for biological deposits and sediment, Reuß simply developed one himself. His cleaning device worked well, and the light, sand-coloured membrane around the pool was clean for the first time again: “Ever since, the water in my swimming pool has looked like the sea around the Maldives”, says Reuß enthusiastically. Torsten Reuß’ pool cleaner has an electric rotating brush that uses suction in operation. The integrated ultra-fine filter is self cleaning. The device can be used either manually using a telescopic rod or as a robot that navigates the pool autonomously.
Throughout the stages of setting up his own business, Reuß was often asked why he wouldn’t outsource production to China: “I have almost all of my suppliers here in the region. Those are ideal manufacturing conditions for my company”, explains Reuß. “Anyway, high-end technical products are not much cheaper from Asia.” Furthermore, the entrepreneur wants to be part of the final assembly and quality control processes. In this way, he can ensure good quality “made in Germany”.
